Canada has always been an attractive place to live, but it’s even more desirable today with its booming economy and the never-ending promise of job opportunities. Whether you’re a native Canadian looking to advance in your career or someone who just moved to Canada from abroad, getting your foot in the door can be daunting without the right strategy, especially if you don’t have any Canadian work experience under your belt. With these tips, you can make sure that your next job application in Canada gets noticed and lands you an interview appointment!

1) Start with the basics
There are many ways to find a job in Canada. One of the easiest is to go online and use one of the many job websites available, such as Indeed or Monster.ca. These sites allow you to post your resume and search for jobs that fit your qualifications. You can also apply directly to companies that interest you by visiting their website or by sending them an email with your resume attached. If you live near a branch office, it might be worth dropping off your resume in person; this increases the chance they will keep it on file.

2) Get your resume in order
In order to get your resume in order, it is important that you take the time to research the company you are applying to and tailor your application accordingly. If you can’t find much information about the company, focus on what you do know and highlight your experience relevant to those skills. Showing an interest in the company by researching them will show that you are serious about your application and care about which job opportunities you apply for. It also shows that you’re confident and interested in the industry of the company, as well as some valuable insight into where your strengths lie. A final point is to remember that resumes should be tailored to each individual employer; this means writing a separate resume for each position applied for. When you submit more than one application with the same resume, employers may assume that there’s no need to read through all of them because they’re all identical.

What’s your greatest weakness? It is important to be honest, but you should also try to answer the question by discussing how you are working on improving that weakness.
What are your long-term goals? You should have short-term and long-term goals (3 years, 5 years). Be sure that these goals align with the job you are applying for.

If they ask you about your hobbies or interests, talk about things that are relevant to the job you’re applying for. If it’s not an appropriate time or place for such questions then just say so. 4) Research Canadian employers
Researching Canadian employers will not only help you find the perfect company, but it will also tell you what employers are looking for. Canadian employers have different cultures and expectations, so make sure to do your research. For example, if an employer is more formal, dress more formally. If they’re more casual, dress more casually. If they prefer employees with foreign work experience or fluency in languages other than English or French, mention this on your resume!

5) Consider applying for jobs online

If you are not sure what to include, you can always check out the company’s website or social media accounts. Make sure that all of your documents are up-to-date: All information listed on your resume must be accurate and relevant, so be careful when updating it. When you’re looking, try to read the descriptions of the jobs carefully to determine if they are the right fit. For example, if you’re not currently bilingual, then don’t apply to any jobs that require fluency in French or English. However, if you are fluent in Spanish, for instance, but not fluent in either English or French yet, then you may be able to apply for jobs that only require a good level of proficiency in both languages. The idea is to show that you have the skills necessary for the job even though your skills aren’t perfect yet.

9) Use a placement agency
Placement agencies help with the process of finding jobs. They save you time by searching and submitting your resume to potential employers. Placement agencies are not free, but they can take care of some of the steps that you would have to do yourself if you were looking for work on your own. Some placement agencies charge a fee upfront, others charge when you find employment; still others don’t charge anything at all. If possible, try to use an agency that doesn’t charge upfront fees because this will make it easier for you to obtain the type of job that best suits your needs.

10) Don’t give up
Don’t give up. You might be turned down from one or two jobs, but that doesn’t mean you won’t get the next one. Keep trying. You’ll find something, it’s just a matter of when and where.
