Whether you’re just starting out in high school, or looking to pursue further study of mathematics, one thing’s for sure – Canada offers plenty of educational opportunities in the field of math. But which scholarships are out there? What are the requirements? What are the best places to apply to? The answers to these questions and more can be found below! We’ve compiled 10 practical tips on how to get mathematics scholarship in Canada, as well as a glossary of key terms that may be useful when searching for similar scholarships internationally.

1) Choose the Right Program
Choosing the right program is one of the most important things to consider when applying for a scholarship. The best way to do this is to determine what you want your career to be. Do you want to work in a business environment or in academia? This will narrow down your options and make it easier for you to find the scholarships that are perfect for your needs. For example, if you want to become an actuary, then you should apply for an actuarial math scholarship; but if you want to go into teaching then applied math would be better suited for your situation.

2) Start Early
Many students don’t start searching for opportunities to study mathematics until the last year or two of high school. Even then, they usually only take a cursory glance at the awards and scholarships available. However, if you want to get a scholarship in mathematics, it pays to start early. The earlier you start looking for opportunities, the more time you have to find one that is right for you and your interests.

3) Keep Your Grades Up
If you’re in your final year of high school, it’s important to make sure that your grades are as good as possible in order to increase your chances of getting a scholarship. The only way this will be possible is if you do the work and stay on top of all assignments. Keep up with your schoolwork so that you can focus on applying for scholarships instead of stressing about what you’re going to do after high school.

4) Write a Standout Essay
In order to get a scholarship in mathematics, you need to write a Standout Essay. This is the first and most important step. It’s not enough to have straight As. You need to be able to show the committee that you are passionate about mathematics and have something interesting or unique about yourself. What kinds of questions should you ask when writing an essay? The following are some ideas:
What was your favorite math class?
What is a problem you solved in mathematics? What mathematical achievement do you find impressive? What’s the coolest thing about math? Why do you want to study mathematics as your major at university or college? What will you gain from studying this course of study for the next four years? And how does it relate to your interests and career aspirations?
What will you lose if you don’t pursue this course of study for the next four years? And how does it relate to your interests and career aspirations?

5) Focus on Extra-Curricular Activities

High school students should be taking advantage of any extra-curricular activities they can to develop their skills and get a leg up on their competition. This includes focusing on Math competitions or contests, as well as joining Math clubs at school. The more challenging the math problems are that you can solve, the better your chance is at getting a scholarship. You don’t need to know all the different math formulas by heart or anything like that – just show what you’re capable of doing in front of someone who’s judging you!
This also means taking an active part in the Math Olympiad if it is available in your region.

6) Demonstrate Financial Need
Students are often required to demonstrate financial need in order to be eligible for a scholarship. This is generally done through submitting your previous year’s tax return, which will show your income and number of dependents. You may also submit a letter from your parents or guardians confirming that you are financially dependent on them. Some scholarships require students to submit bank statements as proof of financial need, but this is uncommon.

7) Consider Applying to Multiple Schools
If you are serious about getting a mathematics scholarship in Canada, you should consider applying to multiple schools. Applying to just one school may not be enough because there is no guarantee that you will get accepted. If you apply to five schools, your odds of getting accepted are greater. Remember that each school has different requirements so make sure that the information included in your application packet is accurate. Some schools might require a resume and others might not so make sure you research the specific needs for each school.

8) Follow Up with the Scholarship Committee
Follow up with the Scholarship Committee. Keeping in touch with the committee will show your commitment to the institution and your interest in their scholarship. Plus, it’s a good idea to follow up with them just to see if they have any questions or concerns, which could be remedied before you send in your application!
*Note: You can also use this advice for any scholarships you are applying for.

9) Use Your Resources
The first step to getting a scholarship is to take the time to review your resources. This includes taking a look at what schools you may have been accepted to and what scholarships they offer. It also includes looking at what scholarships are available through your high school or college, or through the company where you work. Sometimes, these opportunities are not advertised, so it is important to make an effort and ask about them.

10) Seek Out Other Funding Opportunities
Seek out other funding opportunities that can help you get a scholarship. Consider applying for any scholarships that are sponsored by your school or employer, apply for any scholarships that are open to students with disabilities, or even consider applying for assistance through your local government. Your local library may have books on how to find scholarships that could be perfect for you as well. What’s more is that these types of programs will not only provide you with funds to study but also equip you with valuable skills and knowledge in an area that is in high demand among employers.
