The Role & Responsibilities

The Credit Risk Manager will work within Consumer business, covering a portfolio of brands, responsible for setting the acquisitions strategy for new unsecured lending, as well as managing the division’s Risk Appetite, ensuring appropriate monitoring and remedial actions are in place to mitigate risks as appropriate

The role will involve the use of advanced analytics to ensure we deliver performance MI and insights to relevant governance committees and recommending changes to reduce credit risk and improve oversight.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Support the Senior Manager in owning the Risk Appetite and Key Risk Indicators for Acquisitions including early performance monitoring and customer affordability metrics, completing deep dives into any unexpected trends and recommending mitigating action where necessary

  • Manage the decision strategies for credit management and affordability assessment, using appropriate data, champion/challenger approaches and analytical tools. Regularly monitor industry developments and innovation to highlight new opportunities and ideas

  • Develop and optimise the underwriting strategy to ensure maximum automation in a timely manner whilst adopting a ‘test & grow’ approach to the use of manual underwriting

  • Maintain a strong customer and commercial focus; ensuring stakeholders are aware of the rationale behind proposals and changes

  • Identifying and implementing ways to enhance portfolio modelling and undertaking research into potential new areas for analytics

  • Support the Consumer Credit Risk Committees and provide appropriate leadership on Credit Risk related projects

  • Build, lead and develop a diverse, market-leading Credit Risk team

  • Help to drive increased profit and reduced losses through the utilisation of new data sources, analytical techniques and the identification of new opportunities to deploy data and analytical insight across the Consumer Group

The Person

  • Extensive experience of credit risk management in the banking sector, with good knowledge of the UK Consumer Credit Act and Consumer Credit sourcebook (CONC); including responsible lending, affordability and vulnerable customers

  • Strong technical experience in creating automated decisioning processes for consumer credit products such as policy rule management and champion/challenger approaches

  • Strong understanding of analytics, data science and associated technologies and advanced experience with SAS and/or Python
