The Genetics Medical Laboratory Technologist carries out a diverse range of work activities, ensuring all duties and responsibilities and handled with accuracy and efficiency to provide quality results. The Genetics Medical Laboratory Technologist will perform all aspects of sample processing and analysis using a wide variety of advanced Cytogenetic and Molecular Genetic laboratory applications. The Genetics Medical Laboratory Technologist will identify incidents and non-conformances, escalate concerns as appropriate, document quality control, and participate in quality assurance activities.

  • Member in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO), registered in Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics
  • Practical working experience in a Clinical Genetics laboratory
  • Experience with computer database management and Laboratory Information Systems
  • Proficient in isolating DNA and RNA from several tissue types including blood, fresh tissues, FFPE, tissue culture cells, amniotic fluid cells and CVS
  • Proficient in molecular diagnostic techniques including PCR, Sanger sequencing, real-time PCR, array technology, Next Generation Sequencing
  • Proficient in Cytogenetic diagnostic techniques including tissue culture, harvesting, slide making, chromosome analysis, FISH and use of an image capture system
  • Perform troubleshooting of test results and equipment, escalate as needed to senior staff
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
